About tim Smiley

Located in Nashville, Tennessee by way of Bloomington, Indiana. I am a dedicated audio professional with a diverse background in live sound and studio engineering. While touring was a large portion of my early career, often 200 days out of the year, I remained committed to studio recording, mixing and mastering. In recent years, I’ve shifted my focus toward mastering, collaborating with notable producer Brad Cook and contributing to releases by artists such as Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, among many others.

My interest in recording was birthed out of necessity in the Indianapolis punk-hardcore scene, where I recorded and mixed my own bands as well as my friends' bands. Following this path, in 2010, I graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Recording Arts through the IU Jacob's School of Music. I also pursued a minor in Physics, which greatly influenced my understanding of all things sound-related. Additionally, I interned at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a professional recording studio environment while exhibiting a strong DIY ethos.

Since 2008, I have been working as a freelance live sound engineer, originally cutting my teeth at the Bishop Bar in Bloomington, IN. There, I worked with various regional and national indie artists, developing my skills in live sound reinforcement. This experience led to touring opportunities with acts such as Moonface (Jagjaguwar, Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown), Menomena (Barsuk), Foxygen (Jagjaguwar), Unknown Mortal Orchestra (Jagjaguwar), Jenny Hval (Sacred Bones), Houndmouth (Warner Music / Dualtone), and The Head and The Heart (Warner Music) / Sub-pop), among others. Through my touring career, I have developed strong relationships with leading audio manufacturers, such as SSL and AEA Ribbon Microphones.
